HISTORY

The Maidstone and District Short Mat Triples League was founded in 1988 and consisted of one league of six clubs. These clubs were: Detling, Langley, Rochester, Sutton Valence, Tovil & YMCA.

By 1999 the league had expanded to five divisions and encompassed clubs from Grain, in the north, New Ash Green, in the west, Marden, in the south to Lenham in the east. A total of 23 clubs then entered teams into the league with a number of clubs entering more than one team.

In 2002 the league reduced to four divisions. In 2003 a total of 20 clubs entered teams into the league which continued to operate four divisions.

The league season starts in October of each year and runs until April the following year. The league format is three teams of triples playing each club on a home and away basis.

In addition to the league a knockout shield competition is held. The competition format is two teams of triples playing at which ever club has been drawn at home. The winning club being decided on shot difference on the summation of the two mat scores. The semi-finals and final of the knockout competition is held each year at a different venue around the geographical area of the league. In addition to the competition finals being played the presentation of all the league shields and trophies takes place.

To encourage competition between the various leagues within Kent, Inplay Ltd donated the Inplay Challenge Trophy. This trophy was first competed for at the end of the 1990/91 season and is played for annually. Teams of triples from the winning teams of the competing leagues play each other, generally in September, at venues hosted by each league in turn. Originally the competition was between the Maidstone & District, Malling and South East Kent leagues. In 2000 the competition was extended to embrace the Swale and West Kent Leagues.
